Rebecca Fry's Blog On
My first draft of the spread has been completed, with an anatomy guide on the left, and my article on the right. I will attempt to fit in more features after getting feedback, but I’m not quite certain of how to go about that, without making the magazine look messy. If it seems too convoluted, then it will go against the minimalistic approach I am attempting to take in designing my magazine.

I’ve begun trying to design my double page spread, using a new medium, but I have decided to change my concept again to art, yet another hobby of mine. I think not only would I be able to create a more aesthetically pleasing design, but I would also enjoy the development process more, and have an easier time creating ideas. Art has a lot of stories behind it, and there are many famous artists with interesting backstories I could write about for my articles, and I could provide artistic tips and tricks for designing on your own artwork.
I have recreated the magazine cover to fit my new concept, but I am struggling to decide on a name, for now I’ve settled on “A Bookworms Magazine” but I hope to find something better. The cover image is going to be a pile of worn books, I am not quite sure how I want it to be laid out, just that I want it to seem as though the photo is overflowing with books. There will be no human model, the shot will just be a well-lit image of worn books. The books will also most likely be hardcovers and lacking bright colors. The strapline will be “A book lovers guide” because I want it to seem like a guide for how to keep up with everything in the book community. The main cover lines will give ideas about the content of what content to expect in the magazine but not bring too much attention to themselves. I know usually you want the attention to be brought to them, but I feel like having all of that on the cover would take away from the cozy vibe I am going for. The intended Typography is calm and relaxing, because I feel as though that is the idea mood to read. I want the paper to feel homey, the colors and the photos to be warm and inviting. Also, because I want the image to cover the entire page, I am going to change it so that the main cover lines are on boxes of white because it is too hard to read them as is.
I have changed my concept idea to literature, another hobby of mine like baking. My concept is to make a magazine that functions as a reference page, to help readers find new books based on what they know they like. This idea came to me because my sister and I were complaining about how difficult it is to finish a series, because you have nothing to move on to. For other pages there could be articles about up-and-coming authors, book reviews, and fun Buzzfeed like tests to determine things such as your favorite cliché or what popular book character you’re most like.
Media interacting with each other has a significant impact on the companies and viewers because it is a convergence of two worlds. Two separate audiences are now getting exposed to and interacting with a completely different franchise and characters, helping both participating companies increase their exposure and get new fans. It leads to twice as much marketing because there is twice as much to show off and producing it is difficult because the writers must find a way to neatly intertwine two different storylines and have a clean ending where the two groups can part ways without it feeling like there was a weak ending and the collaboration was not just for money.
Modern technology has affected the production of media because it has increased the quality of the products by not only having better visuals and audios, but they save time and money because not only can you immediately watch what you filmed to see if it is good or not, but editing it is easier and the cameras are cheaper. Companies no longer need to pay to distribute their products across the world because they can just send the files digitally once again saving time and money. Marketing can also be done digitally by means of social media accounts and websites that can be used to drop teasers and trailers of what might happen encouraging fans to check it out. This is a notable change because it entirely changes the process of creating media converting it from something difficult and requiring an abundance of time and money to making it so that anyone could create a film and distribute it online. It is also now important for production companies to include these new modern advancements in their work because if they stay at the same quality where everyone else's work is getting better it may seem as though they are falling behind and not as good in comparison. As technology improves standards increase, and if a product does not meet an audience's standards, people will not watch it anymore. Some issues created in targeting local audiences are that small producers cannot afford to create a film intended for a global audience, but because they have such a little audience, they cannot get far with what they do create. There is also the factor that if you have a small budget you have limited options on what type of movie you can create leading to small movies to be similar and therefore less appealing. On the other hand, big companies can afford to create widespread productions which means they can get a bigger audience which brings in more money. They can also create more intricate plots and use effects that would not be available to lower budget films. This creates a cycle where the small stays small and the big says big allowing little room for change. Our own individual experiences of media consumption can show the bigger picture how audiences react. For Films such as the Avengers films, I personally like those more because it has more to it, you are dealing with multiple storylines and characters' at once. And as likely intended regarding Avengers: Infinity War, it got me invested in the Black Panther storyline, which I had not even watched beforehand. I will watch things that have cool trailers, action scenes, and actors I already know and like. All three of those things require budgets that only big movie productions can afford. My notes: The sounds of this film is used to create a sense of discomfort. It is either dead silent or there is eerie music. The music is added in moments where the action is pique, such as when the husband is killing the wife and when he is setting up the rifle. The camera work and angles are always at a position where you can see what a character is looking at or the whole scene. Such as the over the shoulder shots when they husband and wife are disagreeing, the point of view shot when the husband spots the wife, and when the shot begins with someone walking to the camera to show them move. The editing puts together all of the shots so that it shows the current focusing point. Such as showing the guy as he speaks and the wife when she does. The changing of viewpoints while the scene plays out keeps us interested whereas if it kept one shot the entire time it would be boring. The use of mise-en-scène in the film is also used to achieve a sense of discomfort by it happening during the night, in a dimly lit house. The basement is dirty and old which is contrasting to the nice decorating of the upstairs floor.
Scored exam entry: We are supposed to complete the first draft of our magazine cover soon, and I’m still not convinced on my idea of baking, but it’s the best one I have so far, and perhaps I can use it as an excuse to start up my old hobby of it, seeing as I have not had too much free time as of late.
In all honesty, I have no idea where to begin. I consider myself a creative person, and I once I have an idea I like, adding on to it is the easiest thing in the world for me, that being said, I'm stuck. There are so many options for what I could develop my magazine around, yet none seem to stick out for me. I’m considering a few options, but the only one I believe I could find enough content to get somewhere is baking, but I'm not in love with the idea, so I guess I will just have to wait and see if I find something better.
Hi, my name is Rebecca G Fry, and I am writing this blog to track my progress in creating my media studies magazine. I am in the tenth grade at Monarch High School, and one of the select students enrolled in their Cambridge program, which I am extremely thankful for this opportunity to improve my education. For my AICE elective, I decided to choose Media Studies because I enjoy the concept behind marketing, making a product as appealing as possible, influencing people in ways they don’t even realize. Going into this class I feel relatively prepared, as in middle school I was a part of my school's yearbook design class, so I have experience working on formatting and making everything as nice as possible, but I have never done it on my own, only in groups, and I have never had to be the one producing the ideas, only ever the one executing them.
